Explains how operational-level commanders must make complex, forward-looking decisions based on incomplete information, treating their choices as hypotheses shaped by uncertainty and large-scale military dynamics.

The number and importance of the decisions vary for each level of war. The higher the level of war, the fewer decisions are made and the larger the time window for making them. Operational commanders make fewer decisions, but the impact of these decisions is much greater than those made at the tactical level. The key for making sound operational decisions is to have an accurate picture of the operational situation. Such a picture cannot be obtained by a simple sum of tactical data or information. In fact, the operational situation should be built as a synthesis of strategic and tactical information pertaining to the operational commander’s area of responsibility plus his area of interest. It deals with both military and nonmilitary aspects of the situation. This is especially true for the operational commander and, to a lesser extent, for subordinate tactical commanders. The operational commander must make his decisions by considering trends in the operational situation several weeks or even months into the future. In contrast, the tactical commander is concerned with the developments of the tactical situation, from a few hours to 72 or 96 hours in the future. Information technologies should be considered as aids in making operational decisions, not as the masters of the entire decision-making process. The personality traits, professional education, experience, judgment, and wisdom of the operational commander are the key to making sound operational or strategic decisions.

Psychological and social/cultural factors play a major role in making decisions not only by military commanders, but also political and business leaders, and other parts of society. Many books and articles/essays were published on that subject. Yet the role and importance of psychosocial factors are not adequately highlighted in military/naval doctrine and in the education of future military leaders. The principal categories of psychosocial factors in military decision-making are psychological, social/cultural, and situational. The most important psychological factors are stress, fatigue, self-efficacy, and heuristics.

The main method in making a decision is by using an estimate of a military situation. In military terms, the commander’s estimate of the situation is understood as a logical process of reasoning by which a commander considers all the factors affecting a military situation to determine a course of action to accomplish a given mission. The estimate is a reasoned solution to a problem in which each step in the process incrementally leads to a decision that, without these steps, could be arrived at only by an accident. In the estimate, the commander assesses the situation and then tries to embark on a certain course of action aimed at changing the situation for the better or at least taking advantage of the given situation. The ultimate result of the estimate should be a sound decision. The estimate of the situation makes the chances of reaching a sound decision much higher than if an ad hoc method is used. One of the prerequisites for making a quick decision is to grasp the essential points of a given situation quickly and then evaluate them properly. It is in this determination that one’s reasoning and imaginative faculties come into play. In conducting the estimate of the situation, the commander should focus his mental efforts on the most important things. The facts of the situation should be clearly differentiated from assumptions or speculation. All the facts should have a proof. The commander should remain calm. He should think quickly but should not act in haste. He should rethink the situation and make the decision independently while receiving reports from his subordinates. The commander should express his decision in short, clear sentences. The estimate of the situation should not be conducted for the purpose of justifying a decision made beforehand.

The analytic method of the commander’s estimate is extensively used in all militaries. It is especially valuable in the education and training of inexperienced commanders and staff officers. At the operational level, it is used in making a decision for planning campaigns/major operations as part of war (contingency) planning in peacetime. It is also applied in the case of an imminent outbreak of hostilities for planning a campaign or major operations. Mastery of the analytical method of the estimate is the main prerequisite for making intuitive decisions in combat when the time is short and knowledge of the situation is fragmentary and imprecise.

The greater the certainty the more effective the analytical method is. The analytical method is not very suitable in combat. It is too time-consuming. It contains multiple and varied steps and substeps. By the time the operational commander makes the decision, it is most likely already overtaken by the events. In contrast to the analytic method, intuitive decision making relies on the commander’s experience and judgment to determine the best course of action. It is highly suitable when the time for making a decision is very short, information on the situation is insufficient, the staff is small or non-existent, the objectives are variable and ill-defined, and contact between the higher commander and subordinate commanders is missing. Intuitive method has proven superior to analytic method in combat, especially at the tactical level. Some studies show that the intuitive method is used 90 percent of the time. This method of decision-making does not seek to make the ideal solution. It is based on the commander’s judgment and experience.

Reimagines parasitism as a multispecies mode of thinking and living, using the figure of the parasite to explore socio-political and ecological crises in the Anthropocene through relational and more-than-human perspectives.

The host–parasite binary is a recurrent trope in our collective imagination in which the figure of the parasite is usually associated with the stranger, the outsider, the migrant, the homeless and the foreigner: the one who only takes and gives nothing in return. A parasite is an archetypal trickster who sutures stories in exchange for free meals. The figure of the parasite is an interference that disturbs the symmetrical and reciprocal relationship between the host and the guest. The proposed book employs this figure of the parasite to find whether it can help us to rethink existing social and biological relations. Moving beyond the hierarchical binary between host and parasite, native and foreign, and inside and outside, the book proposes a non-hierarchical parasite–parasite relationship as a new mode of surviving in these troubled times, a world in deep distress because of the incessant extractivist and expansionist actions of humans. An ecosystem is a multispecies assemblage and to be a parasite in such a network of relationships is to be grounded, to be close to the earth and to re-member our radical interdependency upon other components of the ecosystem. Parasitism brings down the elevated understanding of human as a species that is above other species to the level of what Haraway calls humus or compost. It transforms the human subject from being a transcendental figure to an earthly being connected with other earthly beings. The parasite teaches us not only to be interrelated but also interdependent, that we are radically interdependent upon each other for survival. To be a parasite, as this book suggests, is to remain humble, situated, asymmetrical, queer and interdependent.

The parasite is an ambiguous figure that comes up again and again in the relational thinking of Michel Serres and the deconstructionist thinking of Jacques Derrida, but this book also engages with some of the contemporary thinkers like Lynn Margulis, Charlotte Brives, Donna J. Haraway, Val Plumwood and Virginie Maris; literary critics like J. Hillis Miller; and art critics like A.V. Marracinni to locate the relational turn in ecological and biological discourses in the 21st century. The book espouses parasitism as a form of multispecies thinking as well as doing necessary for survival in the Anthropocene.

Explores how contemporary Nigerian theatre, literature, film, music, and digital platforms confront the status quo, express postcolonial identity, and foster cultural and political discourse. Emerging Voices on Nigeria’s Literary, Filmic and Entertainment Platforms offers a groundbreaking exploration of contemporary Nigerian creativity. This edited volume brings together fresh, scholarly perspectives on how a new generation of writers, filmmakers, musicians, and artists is reshaping the cultural landscape. From dissecting the revolutionary narratives in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus and the radical scenography of Dele Odule’s theatre, to analyzing the potent socio-political commentary in Nollywood and the Afrobeat revolution of Fela Kuti, this book covers vast intellectual terrain. It boldly tackles urgent issues such as gender ideology, marital violence, the Niger Delta struggle, and the global influence of Nigerian soft power. Essential reading for scholars of African studies, media, and postcolonial literature, this collection signals a vibrant and critical new direction in understanding Nigeria’s powerful and evolving artistic voice. This edited collection serves as a critical intervention in the discourse on contemporary Nigerian culture. Edited by Alex Chinwuba Asigbo and Gloria Emeagwali, the volume assembles a cadre of scholars to interrogate the dynamic intersections of literature, film, theatre, and music within the Nigerian context. Structured into two thematic sections—“Gender, Power and Cultural Resistance” and “Entertainment, Education and Nation-Building”—the chapters engage with a diverse range of primary sources. The analysis spans from the literary fiction of Olu’Dolapo and Stephen Inegbe to the cinematic narratives of Nollywood and Dan Kpodoh; from the revolutionary theatre of Dele Odule and James Heritage Umana to the musical legacies of Fela Kuti and modern-day artistes. By prioritizing emerging critical voices and contemporary subject matter, including the reception of African culture on Netflix, this book provides an indispensable resource for understanding the complexities, resistances, and innovations that define modern Nigerian artistic production and its role in national and global dialogues.

This book seeks to excavate the changing status of the Gothic within what, after Raymond Williams, we might call the selective tradition, from approximately 1814 to 1921. Excavating the Castle demonstrates that the Gothic novel was present in the selective tradition almost from its inception, was present in the first durable consolidation of English literary history written after its emergence, and that the Gothic concept crystalized more than half a century earlier than historians of the Gothic had realized previously. The historiography of the Gothic has long been considered a settled story, though the findings of this book call that story into significant question. How did we miss so much of the story? This is above all a work of literary history, but it is a work of literary history designed to serve the needs of the field of Gothic studies. That said, it is also about more than the Gothic, implicating much larger issues related to the history of ideas; book history; information and library sciences; the materials, methods, and practice of literary history; the digital humanities; and even questions of individual positionality and human contingency.

Explores the psychology of power, showing how it shapes behaviour and leadership, and offers a research-based framework for engaging with power ethically, responsibly and for the common good.

In an era marked by uncertainty, polarisation and rapid change, growing numbers of people are placing disproportionate amounts of power in the hands of a few people. This trend reflects a widespread longing for strong, authoritative leadership, particularly in times of crisis, yet it also exposes a dangerous paradox: While power can provide stability and direction, it can just as easily distort judgement, encourage impulsive behaviour and erode empathy. Research consistently shows that power can act like a drug, producing feelings of euphoria, confidence and invincibility that make it both attractive and deeply addictive. These effects help explain why those who gain power often struggle to relinquish it, and why even well-intentioned leaders may undergo a troubling psychological transformation once they ascend to positions of power.

Carsten C. Schermuly argues that the solution is not to reject power but to understand it more clearly. His book is a call for a more mindful, transparent and responsible engagement with power across all areas of life, within personal relationships, organisations and society as a whole. By drawing on insights from psychological research, he illustrates the many layers through which power operates: the personal resources that grant individuals influence; the biological and neuropsychological changes that occur when power is gained or lost; and the shifts in perception, cognition and behaviour that can accompany power.

Schermuly also explores why certain individuals rise to power in organisational contexts, how power can corrupt decision-making and which structural conditions can help reduce its negative side effects. He highlights the importance of psychological empowerment as a healthier, more sustainable alternative to traditional top-down authority. Rather than relying on concentrated control, organisations can cultivate distributed power structures, improved leadership selection processes, and cultures that reward responsibility over dominance.
Importantly, this book is not a manual for acquiring power or manipulating others. Instead, it reveals how power manipulates us and shapes our actions, identities and vulnerabilities. By acknowledging and understanding these mechanisms, individuals and organisations can prepare more effectively for the challenges of leadership. Ultimately, Schermuly offers a research-based framework for using power ethically, constructively and for the benefit of the common good.

Explores how para texts in detective fiction impact the construction of meaning, revealing how narrative framing shapes knowledge, justice, and interpretation.

Zi-Ling Yan’s Framing the Clue Puzzle examines a familiar but unsystematically addressed and understudied feature of much Golden Age detective fiction: the conscious incorporation of paratexts into the mystery narrative. After examining Gérard Genette’s pioneering work on paratexts and recent criticism concerned with their literary applications, Yan draws upon Dan Sperber and Deidre Wilson’s Relevance Theory and Richard Walsh’s notion of fictionality to develop an approach in which paratexts are understood to exert framing functions by implicature while, because they are subsumed in the text, only mimicking metalepsis. This understanding of the fictive paratext is then applied to a data set consisting of 530 detective narratives divided into five core chapters covering prefaces, footnotes, maps, floorplans, and diagrammatic devices. The results disclose consistent patterns of development between para- or intra-textual types over time and within subgenres: a trickle of paratextual material in the late nineteenth-century Classical period of the genre, notable increases during the 1920s, which peak the 1930s and subside in the 1940s, bracketing the Golden Age clue-puzzle.

The chapter sequence is built upon several criteria: degree of paratextual independence or integration, physical placement, and the rhetorical aspects of voice evoked by the problem of the para-/intra-textual locus of enunciation. The movement is from detachable, more personalized elements visibly situated at the margin to increasingly anonymous figures which are more integrated and internal. The depersonalization of voice coincides with the progressive obfuscation of agency and subtler dimensions of framing that evoke forms speaking as forms. Once brought to notice as objects to be studied rather than thresholds mutely registering as transmissive features of discourse, their incidence raises several questions pertaining to their historical appearance, to their normative framing capacity, and relatedly, to how they serve discursively as guarantors of content beyond their attribution to characters, narrators, or authors. In short, I show how in this capacity they are linked to the promotion of certain types of knowledge and concepts of justice contained in the pages they frame.

Reveals how modern sport produces systemic social harms and outlines practical reforms to strengthen integrity, accountability, and safeguarding.

Sport occupies a near-sacred place in modern society. Across the world, it is treated as a dependable source of health, community, pride, and moral education. Politicians and commentators routinely claim that the values learned on the field translate into better schools, workplaces, and communities. Yet the everyday reality of contemporary sport often looks different: integrity scandals, doping and match-fixing, abuse and safeguarding failures, violent and exclusionary fan cultures, and repeated examples of discrimination, exploitation, and organizational cover-ups.

This book argues that these outcomes are not anomalies. They are patterned social harms that arise from the way sport is organized, commercialized, governed, and culturally interpreted. Rather than asking whether sport is “good” or “bad,” Smith and Stewart show how benefits and harms are co-produced, and why the “force for good” story can obscure risks and weaken accountability. Across ethics, culture, and role-model narratives, the book explains how incentives, media logics, institutional myths, and governance gaps can amplify harm even in well-intentioned programs.

Sporting Systems and Social Harm is also solutions-oriented. It closes with a reform agenda for policy and practice: stronger integrity systems, better safeguarding and participant protection, more realistic social impact claims, and evaluation standards that treat social value as something to be evidenced, not assumed. Written for scholars, students, policymakers, journalists, and sport leaders, the book offers a clear framework for rethinking sport’s social value in an era of heightened scrutiny.

Challenges Kripkean orthodoxy; develops Wittgensteinian alternatives in logic, language, and metaphysics; and reassesses fundamental philosophical conceptions. Iron Pyrites critiques ideas developed or assumed by Kripke, central to analytic philosophy for over half a century. The critical discussion also develops alternative philosophical views on logic, language, metaphysics, and philosophy generally, characterized by a Wittgensteinian approach. Ben-Yami critiques Kripke’s concept of rigidity, revising it in the process. He rejects the “causal”-communication picture of names, arguing for a different view of name use. Identity is shown to be contingent, on logical and conceptual grounds, as is the origin of people and things. The meaning of kind terms is independent of any unknown essence. All proposed examples of necessary a posteriori knowledge are invalidated, and the concept of metaphysical necessity is shown to be empty. Talk of fictional characters is not committed to their existence in any form, abstract or other. The notion of speaker’s reference, as contrasted with semantic reference, is incoherent. Kripke’s approach to the liar paradox is shown to be misguided, and an alternative resolution of the paradoxical situation is provided. Wittgenstein’s views on rule-following and on meaning something by a word are reinterpreted and endorsed. The principle of non-contradiction, assumed by Kripke and most other philosophers, is in fact a dateable decision on an optional mode of description. And the notion of the mathematical infinite is reconsidered, showing that different infinities differ not in size but in orderliness. Accompanied by methodological reflections, a Wittgensteinian view of logic, language, metaphysics, and philosophy emerges. Would-be philosophical discoveries and innovations often reflect confusion and misunderstanding, and real achievement lies in returning to the point we were before being misled. The gold promised was fool’s gold.

Offers an interdisciplinary corporate governance perspective on the rising global adherence to ESG principles, exploring its historical roots and regulatory evolution to serve both academic and professional audiences.

This book concerns a unique approach of assessing the high increasing rates of adherence to ESG principles through the perspective of an interdisciplinary, corporate governance approach. As regulatory authorities and related authorities globally demand adherence and a genuine adoption of a standardised understanding and implementation of ESG principles, new methods of assessment are being agreed. Despite its importance, ESG has not been successfully analysed within this context. It could serve as a unique textbook to lecturers in addition to its main purpose as a general book for specialists and practitioners in the fields such as law, economics, management and governance. As large companies are in particular need to comply with ESG adoption, this book assesses the history of its roots in the City of London and its development through Lord Mervyn King and the King Laws in South Africa.

There will be great pressure on large companies to be rated as ESG compliant or they will lose their ratings status in the world economy. This book charts this course and assesses the outcomes. The importance of these outcomes cannot be underestimated, and countries such as South Africa are finding they will be stranded economically if they do not comply. In this book, the authors assess these important issues and what rating systems will be acceptable to maintain high levels of investment on the LSE, JSE by pension funds, asset management companies and banks in listed companies. They also analyse the Maritime sector in detail which is based financially in the City of London and which is not covered in related books despite it being a sector that carries controls 95% of world trade.

Explores Bollywood cinema’s aesthetic, cultural and corporeal dimensions across foundational genres, iconic performers and diasporic narratives, highlighting the interplay of narrative, poetry, the body and national and transnational identities. The first substantive chapter of the book recovers the special allure of Parsi theatre and the role of the Muslim courtesan in Bollywood cinema. If the first provided a foundational cinematic scaffolding, the Muslim courtesan films gave the cinema its very special quality, more immediately the language of poetry in Urdu. There was nevertheless a tragic quality to the Muslim courtesan films and that tragic quality was given structural form through the ‘Devdas’ movies of the sentimental man of feeling whose life is marked by loss, failure to find the object of love and finally sacrifice in death. Beginning with Chapter Two the book offers three genres that are foundational to any serious reading of Bollywood cinema. The first, dealt with in Chapter Two, is the genre of the Arabian Nights tales in as much as these fantasies provided a narrative base that emphasised India’s own inter-connected and diverse cultural heritage. The second, Bollywood mythologicals, examined in Chapter Three express what may be called the religio-cultural dominant of the nation. The third, examined in Chapter Four, is the disturbing fantasy of the darker, Gothic, side of humanity. However, when it came to the latter’s transformation in the established melodramatic genre of Bollywood, the Gothic took the form of reincarnation tales. The book is defined by the correspondence between cinema and one’s passionate, sensual and even libidinal relationship to it. The corporeal aesthetic is read through two exemplary actors: Helen and Shammi Kapoor. They occupy Chapters Five and Six of the book, and both chapters have as their central theme precisely the question of the body in cinema and its articulation or representation either as an allegory of lived experience or as a redefinition of affective or precognitive understanding of the nation. Against the earlier emphasis on doctrinaire ethics, allegorical masculinity and nationalist ideology via a socialist realism, the libidinal enjoyment of the spectatorial image led to sensual delight and an understanding of the hitherto undertheorized aesthetic possibilities of the body in cinema. The final substantive chapter (Chapter Seven) examines a dramatic turn during the first ten years of the third millennium. The book frames this shift with reference to elements of the diasporic imaginary captured in some of the films of the period and foreshadowed in the Prologue. In these films, Bollywood cinema unobtrusively enters the life-worlds of the burgeoning Indian diaspora and brings it into its own socio-political sphere. It is also a cinema where, beyond the confines of the Indian nation, the diaspora looks back at the homeland as a space of redemption as well as creativity but without uncritically embracing the jingoism and propagandist historical distortions that have in recent years confounded socio-political norms and bedevilled the nation via films like The Kashmir Files (2022), Chhaava (2025) and Dhurandhar (2025).

Provides a comprehensive multinational analysis of evidence based policy making, examining how evidence is defined, interpreted, and used across professions, governance systems, and leadership contexts to shape public policy and legislation.

The book begins with an introduction of the author and his qualifications for writing it. The ubiquity of policy along with the policy process is described and policy is defined. Why policies fail is addressed. Policy making in education and medicine is presented and various influencers are identified, and a diagram of the hierarchy of policies is shown.
Next, the historical origins of policies are traced back to ancient family groups in China and the emergence of cities and democracies in Greece. The impact of the Industrial Revolution and Age of Revolution are discussed. Policy development both within and outside government is examined.
What follows is an analysis of the role of evidence in policy formation with a depiction of effective use of evidence. Distortions of evidence are detailed and policy-making tools such as cost-benefit analysis and statistical tools are discussed. A section on the problems of such analysis is provided along with recommendations on which tools to use.
Scientific evidence in policy is then presented with a discussion of how scientists like Darwin use the scientific method to make conclusions. The reactions of office holders is discussed. The rise in the influence of science on public policy is then explained, especially during world wars with the development of atomic weapons. Ethical issues are presented and the matter of becoming an influential scientific advisor is discussed.
Journalistic and communication based evidence follows with a history of print and broadcast media. Journalism during war is described and the interaction between the media and legislators is offered. Finally, an interview with journalism professor Sam Freedman provides in-depth insight on chief ethical issues.
For the topic of the influence of law and the judiciary, the book details how close the connection is with policy making. A review of the English foundations of law and the rapid growth of courts demonstrates its importance on policy making. Many office holders are lawyers and standards for evidence are high and thus applicable in legislation.
Other policy influencers are introduced next. These are deep rooted and are religion, business, unions, and education. The histories of each in policy making are described along with an evaluation of their relative power in evidence based policy.
The overlay of policy creation in the context of strategy, strategizing, and structure is the next topic. The evolution of long-term planning to strategic planning to strategic management is plotted along with an analysis of how policy can be implemented. Strategizing is described as the active attention to strategic opportunities by involving all members of an organization. A series of strategic analysis tools are introduced to the reader. For structure, a comparison by presidential and parliamentary systems is offered regarding policy formation.
The last part of the book deals with communications in general, management, leadership, and recent developments in global policy issues. The value of the policy memo and importance of Op Ed’s media conferences, town halls, and petitions are described. The history of management is detailed along with how that influences public administration especially in bureaucracy. The advantages of servant leadership is described. Finally, seven major international policy issues that need to be addressed are presented.

The book provides an original critical, political economist’s introduction to the meaning, causes and consequences of inflation. It argues that it is too easy to think of inflation as a ‘thing’, when price indexes are not only complex statistical but also social constructions. It provides a historical contextualisation of price changes before a detailed engagement with rival theories of inflation’s causes. Emphasising inflation’s complexity and social character, the book both criticises and develops the kernels of truth in existing accounts in moving towards a more satisfactory synthesis. The book finally turns to neglected questions of inflation’s consequences, contesting prevailing claims that it is a general evil. Inflation tends to foster faster growth and reduced inequality.

This book examines the definitional differences between classical and modern political theory as they relate to the constituent parts of justice. Since the earliest days of political philosophy, justice has been understood as the goal of the state. And most thinkers have spent a considerable time addressing the components of justice—nature, happiness, freedom, equality, and virtue. This book looks at these terms using both the classical and modern conceptions and argues that modern thinkers’ redefinition of the terms has changed the way we conceive of justice and thus, transformed the ways states evaluate issues of right and wrong.

The Culture of Caution: Inside Islamic TV Talk Show Production offers an in-depth exploration of the unique challenges faced by media producers within Islamic contexts, particularly those working at the Islam Channel in the United Kingdom. Through personal anecdotes and rigorous analysis, the book examines the pervasive ‘culture of caution’ that influences content creation, emotional labour and the overall production culture. This project aims to illuminate the intricate dynamics of representing Islam in a predominantly non-Muslim media landscape, highlighting the impact of socio-political pressures and the need for authentic representation. By foregrounding the voices of those working behind the scenes, this book advocates for a more nuanced understanding of Islamic media and its role in shaping public perceptions of Muslims.

Beethoven’s Freude theme—or “Ode to Joy”—is perhaps the most iconic melody ever created. This book sets out to show why the Freude theme has acquired this almost mythic status and what its use in the finale of the Ninth Symphony reveals about the mechanics of tonal composition. The book explains how the finale of the Ninth Symphony offers a crash course in music theory made possible by Beethoven’s extensive training with Neefe, Haydn, Albrechtsberger, and others, and his enormous library of theory treatises, by the likes of Fux, C. P. E. Bach, Riepel, and Koch. That course covers everything from the basics of tonal voice leading and motivic development to advanced topics such as double counterpoint, canon, and ars combinatoria. The book also draws on details from his own students such as Ries and Czerny.

The book presents an original study of the #MeToo movement in Taiwan, focusing on how the movement was instigated by and communicated in the wake of the Taiwanese Netflix series Wave Makers. It first examines how the storyline and character design of the show correspond to the unique challenges survivors of sexual violence face in Taiwan and, in this process, explicates how fictional narratives are translated into actionable forms of social mobilization that empower survivors of sexual violence. The rest of the book examines the ways in which communications of #MeToo took place on social media in Taiwan, using case studies and secondary sources to explore the strengths and limitations of #MeToo as hitherto witnessed in Taiwan’s media space.
